Hirame (Flounder) - Lefteye flounder

Japanese: ヒラメ(鮃) - ヒラメ（英語表記）lefteye flounder

A general term for marine fish belonging to the families Pleuronectidae and Pleuronectidae in the order Pleuronectiformes, or one of these. Flounders are often compared to plaice and look similar, but there are fewer varieties of them. However, they are widely distributed from the tropics to temperate zones, and about 200 species are known. This family is divided into the families Pleuronectidae and Pleuronectidae based on whether the positions of the left and right pelvic fins are symmetrical or not, and whether the positions of the eyes are symmetrical or not along the midline of the body. In Japan, there are 10 species of Pleuronectidae and about 30 species of Pleuronectidae, but the most important of these is the Japanese flounder.

カレイ目ヒラメ科，ダルマガレイ科に含まれる海産魚の総称，またはそのうちの1種を指す。ヒラメ類は，カレイと並び称され，姿も似ているが，カレイ類に比べその種類は少ない。しかし，熱帯から温帯にかけて広く分布し，約200種が知られている。この仲間は，左右の腹びれの位置が対称であるかないか，両眼の位置が体の正中線に対称であるかないかでヒラメ科とダルマガレイ科に分けられる。日本ではヒラメ科は10種，ダルマガレイ科は30種ほど知られるが，これらの中でもっとも重要なものはヒラメである。
