An evergreen shrub of the Oleaceae family. Also called Maurinka. Native to India and Arabia. It grows to a height of 1.5-3m, with leaves that are opposite or in whorls of three, broadly ovate, 4-8cm long, and entire. In summer, it produces 3-12 white flowers, each about 2cm in diameter, at the ends of the branches. The corolla lobes are circular or oblong, with about nine, and some horticultural varieties have double flowers. In addition to being grown in pots for decoration, the flowers have a strong fragrance, so in China they are used as a flavoring in tea. This is what is known as jasmine tea (flower tea).
