…彼は，〈元祖･大道具･大仕掛･妖怪（ばけもの）ばなし。林屋正蔵〉の看板を掲げて興行し，《怪譚桂河浪（かいだんかつらのかわなみ）》(1835)，《怪談春雛鳥（はるのひなどり）》(1838)など，得意の怪談物の草双紙四部を残した。彼が没したとき，火葬にしてくれという遺言どおりにすると，棺桶に仕掛けてあった花火が来葬者をおびやかしたという逸話も怪談噺の元祖らしい。…
