A city in the western part of Kagawa Prefecture, in the western part of the Sanuki Plain. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. The central city is a temple town of Zentsuji, and since the 11th Division was established in 1896, it has developed as a military city. The city is served by the Dosan Line, Takamatsu Expressway, and National Route 11. Rice, lettuce, kiwi fruit, and mandarin oranges are cultivated thrivingly. Zentsuji (Gokakusan Tanjoin) is the head temple of the Zentsuji school of Shingon Buddhism, founded by Kukai in 813, and is the 75th temple of the 88 Shikoku temples. Within the spacious grounds, there are buildings and pagodas rebuilt in the Edo period. There are many other temples in the city, and it is a bustling town with pilgrims. It is a garrison for the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force. 39.93 ^km2 . Population: 33,817 (2010).
