In Germanic law, the term Gewere is a central concept in personal law, along with the Gewere in real law, and refers to the father's right of dominion over the members of his household, i.e., his wife, children, and free servants (non-free servants are subject to the Gewere). This right of dominion was originally an absolute and unified right of dominion, like the head of the family in Roman law, but it changed relatively quickly into a right of dominion with a protective character. It later differentiated into individual rights of dominion, such as husband's right over his wife, father's right over his children, guardianship over his wards, and sovereignty over servants. As a result of this dominion, the head of the family had jurisdiction over murder, banishment, sale, and transfer of his wife, children, and servants, and as a protective effect of this dominion, he could demand atonement for any violations suffered by his subjects, and was responsible for the latter's actions.
