Three wars between Britain and Afghanistan (1838-42, 1878-80, 1919). Also known as the Afghan Wars. Britain, the ruler of India, saw the power of Russia, which was conquering Central Asia and moving south, as a threat to India. Britain attempted to conquer Afghanistan as a bulwark to protect India, and in October 1838 issued the Simla Declaration, a de facto declaration of war against Afghanistan. The following year, British troops entered Kabul via Kandahar.

イギリスとアフガニスタンの3回にわたる戦争(1838‐42,1878‐80,1919)。アフガン戦争とも呼ばれる。インドの支配者たるイギリスは，中央アジアを征服しつつ南下するロシアの勢力を，インドに対する脅威とみなした。そしてインド保全のための防壁としてアフガニスタンを征服しようとし，1838年10月，シムラ宣言を出して，アフガニスタンに対する事実上の宣戦布告を行った。翌年，イギリス軍はカンダハールを経てカーブルに入った。
