Three wars between Britain and Afghanistan (1838-42, 1878-80, 1919). Also known as the Afghan Wars. Britain, the ruler of India, saw the power of Russia, which was conquering Central Asia and moving south, as a threat to India. Britain attempted to conquer Afghanistan as a bulwark to protect India, and in October 1838 issued the Simla Declaration, a de facto declaration of war against Afghanistan. The following year, British troops entered Kabul via Kandahar. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
