The product of a number with itself is called the square of that number. For example, the square of 5 is 5 x 5, or 25. It is written as 5 ² = 25. A square is also called a square. This is because you multiply the same number twice. It is also called squaring, since you multiply a number by itself.

A square number is a number that is expressed as the square of another integer. For example, 9 and 36 are square numbers. A square number has one of the following digits in its units: 0, 1, 4, 5, 6, or 9. A square number has an odd number of divisors, including 1 and the number itself, and such integers are limited to square numbers.

For real numbers, the square of any non-zero number is positive, and the square of zero is zero; that is, the square of any real number is never negative. In contrast, the square of a pure imaginary number is negative.

The word square is also used in reference to area. The area of ​​a square with a side length of 1 meter is called 1 square meter, and this is the unit of area. A square meter is expressed as ^m2 . Similarly, the area of ​​a square with a side length of 1 centimeter is called 1 square centimeter ( ^cm2 ), and when one side is 1 kilometer it is called 1 square kilometer ( ^km2 ). In contrast, the area of ​​a square with a side length of, say, 2 meters is sometimes called 2 meters square. The area of ​​this square is 4 square meters, which is different from 2 meters square.

　平方ということばは面積に対しても使われる。一辺の長さが1メートルの正方形の面積を1平方メートルといい、これを面積の単位とする。平方メートルは、m²のように表す。同じようにして、一辺の長さが1センチメートルの正方形の面積を1平方センチメートル(cm²)、一辺が1キロメートルであるときを1平方キロメートル(km²)という。これに対して、一辺の長さが、たとえば、2メートルの正方形の面積を2メートル平方ということがある。この正方形の面積は4平方メートルであって、2メートル平方と2平方メートルとは違っている。
