Yuji Uchimura

Yuji Uchimura

A medical scientist and contributor to professional baseball. Born in Tokyo as the eldest son of Uchimura Kanzo. While a student at First Higher School and Tokyo Imperial University, he made a name for himself as a left-handed fastball pitcher. He graduated from the University of Tokyo's Faculty of Medicine in 1923 (Taisho 12). As a psychiatrist, he is well known for introducing Kretschmer and for his research into the brains of outstanding individuals. He served as the third commissioner of professional baseball from 1962 (Showa 37) to 1965, and contributed greatly to the development of professional baseball. He is particularly known for publishing the Official Baseball Guide and implementing a training system for new players. He is a member of the Japan Academy. He served as a professor emeritus at the University of Tokyo and director of the Institute of Neuroscience.

医学者、プロ野球功労者。内村鑑三(かんぞう)の長男として東京に生まれる。第一高等学校、東京帝国大学の学生時代、左腕速球投手として鳴らした。1923年(大正12)東大医学部卒業。精神医学者としてクレッチマーの紹介や傑出者の脳の研究で著名である。1962年(昭和37)から1965年まで3代目プロ野球コミッショナーを務め、プロ野球の発展に貢献。とくに『オフィシャル・ベースボール・ガイド』の発刊、新人選手研修制度の実施は有名である。日本学士院会員。東京大学名誉教授、財団法人神経研究所所長を務めた。
