Fumio Kamei

Fumio Kamei

Documentary film director. Born in Fukushima Prefecture. After studying at the Leningrad Film School in 1928 (Showa 3), he joined PCL, the predecessor of Toho, in 1933. He caused controversy by editing out the destruction of the Second Sino-Japanese War instead of the victories in "Shanghai" (1938), and was banned by the military for his further portrayal of the hardships of war in "Fighting Soldiers" (1939). After "Kobayashi Issa" (1941), he was arrested under the Peace Preservation Law, becoming the only resistance filmmaker to have his directorial license revoked. He returned to Toho after World War II. He also made feature films such as "War and Peace" (1947), which he co-directed with Yamamoto Satsuo, but was forced out during the Toho dispute. In 1954 (Showa 29), he founded Independent Productions and released films such as The Glad I'm Alive (1956), a documentary about the atomic bombing, and Sunagawa: A Record of Bloodshed (1957), a film about the anti-military base movement.
