A former town in Asa County in the southwest of Yamaguchi Prefecture. It is located in the Asa Basin in the lower reaches of the Asa River. The main settlement, Asa, is the junction of the Sanyo Main Line and the Mine Line, and after both lines were opened, it developed in place of the former post town of Funaki to the east. Habu, facing the Suo Nada Sea, is an agricultural and fishing village. In addition to rice cultivation and greenhouse horticulture, seaweed is also cultivated. Tourist vineyards are also thriving. It is the birthplace of Akama Suzuri inkstones. In March 2005, it merged with Onoda City to become a city, Sanyo Onoda City. 89.81 km2 . 山口県南西部,厚狭(あさ)郡の旧町。厚狭川下流域の厚狭盆地にある。主集落の厚狭は山陽本線と美祢(みね)線の分岐点で,両線開通後,東方の旧宿場町船木に代わって発展した。周防(すおう)灘に臨む埴生(はぶ)は農漁村。米作,施設園芸を営むほか,ノリの養殖も行われる。観光ブドウ園も盛ん。赤間硯(すずり)の産地。2005年3月小野田市と合併し市制,山陽小野田市となる。89.81km2。2万2610人(2003)。
