The head temple of the Hosso sect, located in Noborioji-cho, Nara City. It is one of the Seven Great Temples of Nara and the Ten Great Temples. At the request of Fujiwara Kamatari, the temple was built by his wife and named Yamashina-dera Temple. It was later moved to Kiyomihara in Asuka and called Umayazaka-dera Temple. When the capital was moved to Heijo-kyo, it was moved to its current location and named Kofuku-ji Temple. Thereafter, it governed Kasuga-taisha Shrine and flourished as the family temple of the Fujiwara clan. It controlled the Seven Great Temples, temples and shrines throughout Yamato Province, and feudal lords, and also organized a corps of monks. It was destroyed in 1180 when Taira Shigehira burned down Nara. The Hokuen-do Hall and three-story pagoda are relics that show the style of the early Kamakura reconstruction, while the five-story pagoda and Tokon-do Hall are precious relics that show the pure Japanese style of the Muromachi period. There are also many masterpieces of sculpture from the Nara to Kamakura periods, including the gilt bronze Buddha head (Hakuho period), which was originally the principal image of Yamada-dera Temple, the Ten Disciples (currently six) and the Eight Deities (Tenpyo period) in the Western Golden Hall, the twelve heavenly generals in relief (Heian period), the principal image of the Northern Round Hall, Maitreya Buddha by the Unkei school, and Asanga Vasant (early Kamakura period), all of which are masterpieces that adorn the history of Japanese sculpture. There are also many paintings, crafts, and books in the collection. The Yuimae festival, which is held every October, is one of the most important annual Buddhist events, along with the Saisho-e festival held at Yakushi-ji Temple in March. In 1998, it was registered as a World Heritage Site (cultural heritage) as a cultural asset of the ancient capital of Nara. → Related topicsIkeda Manor|Inson|Ukita Manor|Family temple|Umayasaka|Unkei|Picture house|Enryaku-ji Temple|Onishi Ryokei|Kasuga edition|Kawaguchi Manor|Kangakuin|Kiko-ji Temple|Kyokaku Shiyosho|Kiyomizu-dera Temple|Outer capital|Kōkei|Strong petition|Kōben|Five-story pagoda (architecture)|Kose school|Cultural assets of the ancient capital of Nara|Thirty-three temples of the Western Provinces|Sarusawa Pond|Jion-ji Temple|Shikada Manor|Restaurant|Shimazu Manor|Jokei|Sadakei|Jocho|Shochō peasant uprising|Suita|World Heritage Convention|Seyakuin|Zenen| Monk soldiers|Miscellaneous notes on Daijo-in temples and shrines|Catalog of Daijo-in diaries|Oorikan|Taira Shigehira|Takaya Castle|Firewood manor|Tamon-in diary|Tsuboe manor|Tenpyo period|Todai-ji temple|Tofuku-ji temple|Master carpenter|Tomita manor|Nara-zaka|Magistrate of Nara|Nara Buddhist sculptor|Nanto|Nanto Hokurei|Hakuho period|Haruki manor|Banku-sei|Hiki manor|Hida-in|Hyogo-tsu|Hirano-dono manor|Heijo-kyo|Hosoroki-go|Miroku|Muro-ji temple|Mobara manor|Yamashina|Yamato province|Vimaran|Yoshizaki|Japanese-style architecture Kofukuji TempleSource : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
