Meiji Shrine Outer Garden

Japanese: 明治神宮外苑 - めいじじんぐうがいえん
Meiji Shrine Outer Garden

This green space stretches from the northwestern edge of Minato Ward, Tokyo, to Shinjuku Ward and Shibuya Ward. It covers an area of approximately 300,000 square meters. During the Meiji era, it was the Aoyama Military Training Ground, but when Emperor Meiji passed away, it became a funeral ground. When Meiji Shrine was founded, the outer garden was created as a memorial facility with donations from the public. Construction began in 1919 (Taisho 8) and was completed in 1926. It is home to the Shotoku Memorial Art Gallery, which displays paintings depicting the achievements of Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken, and the ginkgo tree-lined street leading from Aoyama-dori (National Route 246) to the Art Gallery is one of the most beautiful roadside trees in Tokyo. Sports and cultural facilities are concentrated around the Art Gallery, including the National Stadium, Jingu Stadium, Chichibunomiya Rugby Stadium, Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium, Nippon Seinenkan, and Meiji Memorial Hall. It is close to Sendagaya Station and Shinanomachi Station on the JR Chuo Line, National Stadium Station on the Toei Subway Oedo Line, Gaienmae Station on the Tokyo Metro Ginza Line, and Aoyama-itchome Station on the Toei Subway Oedo Line, Tokyo Metro Ginza Line, and Hanzomon Line.
