A city on the west coast of Baranov Island in the Alexander Archipelago in southeastern Alaska, USA. Population: 8,835 (2000). The main industry is fishing, with salmon, crab, flounder, and clams being caught, and forestry and canning are also thriving. The town was founded in 1799 by Alexander Baranov of Russia, and was the capital of Russian America until 1867. After coming under American rule, it prospered as the capital of the Alaska Territory until it was moved to Juneau in 1906. Within the city, there are many buildings that retain the vestiges of the era under Russian rule, and Sitka National Historical Park, known for its collection of totem poles, attracts many visitors.
