His first great feat was the capture of Veii in Etruria. He was later exiled from Rome after taking the spoils of war, and fled to Ardea, where he was appointed dictator when the Gauls attacked Rome. He raised an army and defeated the Gauls, taking back the indemnity that the Romans had given them. He supported the demands of the plebs for the highest magistrate position, and in 367 BC, he supported the deliberation of the Licinius Sextius bill, and was instrumental in rebuilding Rome after the Gallic attacks.
