This irrigation canal directs water from Sameura Dam upstream of the Yoshino River to Kagawa Prefecture via Ikeda Dam. Kagawa Prefecture has little precipitation, and even if there is rain, it is washed away in a short time due to the topography, and water dries up completely during droughts. For this reason, since ancient times, about 20,000 irrigation ponds, including Mannoike, have been built in the prefecture to make the most of rainfall. However, to meet the rapidly increasing water demand, it was a long-cherished wish to divert water from the Yoshino River. The Kagawa Irrigation Canal fulfilled this wish, and was completed in 1974 by the Water Resources Development Public Corporation (→Water Resources Agency). The canal is 106 km long (47 km of which is managed by the Water Resources Agency and 59 km by the national government) and is used for agricultural water (benefit area of about 31,000 ha) and urban water in the prefecture.
