The highest peak in the Caucasus Mountains. An extinct volcano consisting of two peaks, the Western Peak (5,642m) and the Eastern Peak (5,621m). The glacier area is 138.5 km2 . There is a cable car from Mt. Azau, the end of the motorway, to Mirny (3,450m) on the shoulder of Mt. Elibrus, and it is a popular destination for climbers. It was first climbed in 1829.
