Also called hachitan. Silk fabric with vertical and horizontal brown and yellow stripes. It is believed that Fukuda Fukutaro of Hachioji, Tokyo, produced a twill weave imitating the Hachijo stripes of Izu in 1873, sold it as hachitan-ori, and later renamed it hachitan-ori. It sold well as fabric for men's kimono and heko obi, but fell into decline in the mid-Meiji period. In the early Taisho period, Nakamura Genshichi of Osaka tried to revive hachitan-ori as fabric for kimono, but after World War I, shoddy production took its toll, and it nearly disappeared around 1920. Today, it is often mixed with synthetic fibers. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
