A large deer with palmate antlers, some of which can reach 3.7 meters across. It was distributed in Europe and eastern and northern Asia during the middle and late Pleistocene period of the Quaternary Period, but became extinct with the end of the Ice Age. Its morphology is similar to that of modern moose, but it held its head up like a red deer. The European genus Megaloceros and the Asian genus Sinomegaceros are distinguished by the shape of their antlers. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
