〘Noun〙 (also "kyoju") 1. The person who opened the teachings. Refers to the Buddha. ※Kanchiin Hon Sanbo-e (984), lower half: "Fukkyo Bodhisattva has a prostrating form. The person who conquered him was not thought to be the future head of the teachings." ※Heike (early 13th century), vol. 2: "Fu Shojo Daibosattva is the head of the teachings of the sea of suffering and the enlightened king with three perfect bodies." [Benshoron-6] 2. The founder of a sect or school. The founder of a religion. The founder of a sect. ※San Tendai Godaisan-ki (1072-73), vol. 1: "The head of the teachings alone bows to the Buddha and ascends to the throne."
