The state-run British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC), founded in 1935, and the state-run British European Airways (BEA), founded in 1946, merged under the Civil Aviation Act of 1971 to form the current name, but it was not until April 1974 that the airline began operating routes as a fully-fledged corporation. It was privatized in 1987 as it weathered the management crisis following the oil crisis. …
