Proboscidea, Elephantidae. Body length 6-7.5m (including trunk), height 3-4m, weight 5-7.5t. The largest extant land animal. Both males and females have tusks that extend from the upper front teeth, the longest recorded being 3.5m. There are two finger-like protrusions on the tip of the trunk. They live in groups in forests and savannas, feeding on tree branches, leaves, grass, fruit, etc. The gestation period is about 22 months. They are in danger of extinction due to overhunting for their ivory. They are found in central, eastern and southern Africa.
