A city in Belize, a newly emerging Central American country. It was the capital of British Honduras. It is located in the lowlands at the mouth of the Belize River, surrounded by swamps with dense mangrove forests. Its population is 49,000 (1994). Originally inhabited by Mayan indigenous people, the British began to settle there in the 17th century, and it became the center of the region. It suffered serious damage from flooding caused by a hurricane in October 1961, and the capital was moved to Belmopan, which is located on higher ground, in 1970. However, it remains the country's main port city, and handles much of the country's imports and exports. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
