Belize City

Japanese: ベリーズ[市]（英語表記）Belize City

A city in Belize, a newly emerging Central American country. It was the capital of British Honduras. It is located in the lowlands at the mouth of the Belize River, surrounded by swamps with dense mangrove forests. Its population is 49,000 (1994). Originally inhabited by Mayan indigenous people, the British began to settle there in the 17th century, and it became the center of the region. It suffered serious damage from flooding caused by a hurricane in October 1961, and the capital was moved to Belmopan, which is located on higher ground, in 1970. However, it remains the country's main port city, and handles much of the country's imports and exports.

中央アメリカの新興国ベリーズの都市。イギリス領ホンジュラス時代には首都であった。ベリーズ川河口の低地に位置し，周囲はマングローブ林の茂る沼沢地である。人口4万9000(1994)。もともとマヤ系原住民の住む土地であったが，17世紀よりイギリス人が定着しはじめ，同地域の中心となった。1961年10月のハリケーンによる洪水で大被害をこうむり，首都は70年により高地にあるベルモパンに移った。しかし，依然として同国の主要な港湾都市として，輸出入の多くを掌握している。
