...A writer of the late Edo period. Author of kyoka, rhapsodies, kyobun, sharebon, kibyōshi, and kokōbon. Essayist. Real name Tan, commonly known as Naojirō and Shichizaemon. Pen names included Shūzanjin, Neboke Sensei, Yomono Akara, Bajintei, Kyokaen, Yamate Bakajin, Furin Sanjin, and others. A shogunate official born in Ushigome, Edo. His first role as a guide to the literary arts of Edo citizens was with the publication of Neboke Sensei Bunshū (1767), a rhapsodies he had written for fun that was highly praised by Hiraga Gennai. The light-hearted humor of this 19-year-old intellectual samurai was well received and he quickly became famous as a writer. ...

…江戸後期の文人。狂歌，狂詩，狂文，洒落本，黄表紙，滑稽本の作者。随筆家。本名覃，通称直次郎，七左衛門。号は蜀山人，寝惚（ねぼけ）先生，四方赤良（よものあから），巴人亭，杏花園，山手馬鹿人，風鈴山人その他。江戸牛込生れの幕臣。江戸市民文芸の水先案内人の役割を果たした最初は，戯れに作った狂詩が平賀源内の推賞するところとなって出版された《寝惚先生文集》(1767)である。19歳の知的武士の軽快な諧謔が歓迎されて一躍文名をあげた。…
