<br /> A twin circular tumulus located in Serutani, Kanan Town, Minamikawachi District, Osaka Prefecture. It was built in Serutani, a plateau measuring 1km east to west and 4km north to south, between the western foot of Mt. Katsuragi and the hills extending to the south of Tondabayashi City. It was designated a national historic site in 1991. The tumulus consists of two circular mounds, one large and one small, arranged side by side from north to south, the southern mound having an east to west diameter of 44.8m and a height of 8.2m, and the northern mound having an east to west diameter of 30.9m and a height of 7.2m. The length of the main axis of the mounds combined is 77.9m, almost equal to the sum of the diameters of the two mounds. Roofing stones can be seen on both the north and south mounds, and the perimeter of the mound is surrounded by rice paddies that are one level lower than the surrounding land. On the northern hill, a cave-in stone chamber and two hollowed -out house-shaped stone coffins with rope hanging protrusions were found. Details about the southern hill are unknown, and due to tomb robbery, only a few items have been excavated, such as glass beads, silver rings, horse equipment, iron swords, iron arrowheads , and pottery. However, based on the style of the stone coffin and grave goods on the northern hill, it is believed to have been built in the latter half of the 6th century, with a second burial taking place in the early 7th century, and it is said to be one of the very few twin circular tumuli that have neatly retained their original shape. Take the Kongo bus from Tondabayashi Station on the Kintetsu Nagano Line to Seriodani, and walk for about 3 minutes. Source: Kodansha National Historic Site Guide Information |
