A representative Russian heavy machinery factory. Founded in 1872-73 in the capital St. Petersburg as a rail rolling mill by naval engineer NIPutilov. It later shifted to locomotive manufacturing, and in the 20th century became a munitions factory. The first Putilov died in 1880, but on the eve of World War I, Aleksei Ivanovich Putilov (1866-1926), chairman of the Russo-Asiatic Bank, took over as manager. With 12,000 workers in 1905 and 21,000 in 1916, it was the largest factory in Russia. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
