The order experienced rapid growth, especially after the Champagne nobleman Bernard and many of his family members joined (1112). The rules of the order, Carta caritatis (Charity Charter), were drawn up in 1114, and were imbued with the spirit of Christian charity. They elevated the ideals of monks and also served as a moral guide for lay people, becoming the new authority for the administration of the order.
