Large primrose - Large primrose

Japanese: オオサクラソウ - おおさくらそう
Large primrose - Large primrose

A perennial plant of the Primulaceae family (APG classification: Primulaceae). The stem is about 20 cm tall, has a short rhizome, and several leaves with long stalks grow at the base. The leaves are palmately divided into seven lobes, have coarse sawtooth edges, and are heart-shaped at the base, connecting to the stalk. In July, a 30 cm-long stem rises from between the leaves, and several purple-pink flowers grow in a ring at the top. The flowers are cherry-shaped, tubular, and about 1.5 cm in diameter. It grows wild in the high mountains of northern Honshu and Hokkaido, and often grows in clusters in sunny, wet areas. Both the stems and leaves are usually hairy, but in Hokkaido there is a particularly hairy variant called Ezo-oosokurasou.
