Kansai

In modern times, it is a general term for the Kyoto-Han region, whereas the Tokyo region is called Kanto. Originally, it meant the area west of the barrier, but in ancient times, the area was not fixed depending on where the barrier was. There are roughly three cases: (1) it refers to the area west of Ousaka Barrier in Omi Province (Shiga Prefecture), (2) it refers to the area west of the three barriers, namely Suzuka Barrier in Ise Province (Mie Prefecture), Fuwa Barrier in Mino Province (Gifu Prefecture), and Achi Barrier in Echizen Province (Fukui Prefecture), and (3) it refers to the area west of Hakone Barrier (Kanagawa Prefecture).

現代では京阪地方の総称で、東京地方を関東と称するのに対する。本来、関(せき)より西を意味するが、古代ではこの関がどこをさすかにより、その範囲も一定しない。(1)近江(おうみ)国逢坂(おうさか)関（滋賀県）より西の地方をさす場合、(2)三関(さんかん)、すなわち伊勢(いせ)国鈴鹿(すずか)関（三重県）、美濃(みの)国不破(ふわ)関（岐阜県）、越前(えちぜん)国愛発(あらち)関（福井県）より西の地方をさす場合、また(3)箱根(はこね)関（神奈川県）より西の地方をさす場合など、おおむね三つの場合がある。
