A composer of the Flemish school. He is said to have been born in Bergen op Zoom in North Brabant, but there are other theories, and his career before he became choirmaster of Utrecht (1476) is unknown. After that, he was active in various parts of Flanders, and served as choirmaster at Cambrai Cathedral. During this time, he stayed at the court of Ferrara in Italy from 1487 to 1488, and later returned there and succumbed to the plague. He is a representative musician of the middle period of the Flemish school, and he has left behind roughly equal numbers of masses, motets, and secular songs, but his religious music, especially his masses, is important. He is characterized by his flexible use of cantus melody technique, and his music, full of technical ingenuity, is colored by a unique meditative quality. He also composed many works based on popular songs, including his masterpiece, the mass "Mint Mary."
