Hydra (Sea Snake)

Abbreviation: Hya. A horizontally elongated constellation in the southern sky. Its total length from head to tail exceeds 100 degrees, making it the longest of the 88 constellations. In Greek mythology, it was a nine-headed water snake (hydra) that lived in the Lernean swamps and spewed poison from its mouth. It was later defeated by the hero Hercules. Alpha Hydra is a crimson star, meaning "the solitary one" in Arabic. Its apparent magnitude is 2.0, its spectral type is K3, and it is located 130 light years away. Its Latin name is also Cor Hydrae (Heart of the Water Snakes).

略号Hya。南天に横長に連なる星座。頭から尾の先まで全長100度をこえ，長さでは88星座のうちでいちばん長い。ギリシア神話ではレルネーの沼にすむ怪物の水蛇(ヒュドラ)で，9個の頭をもち，口からは毒気を吐いたという。のちに英雄ヘラクレスにより退治される。α星アルファルドは真紅の星で，アラビア語で〈孤独なもの〉という意味。実視等級は2.0等，スペクトル型K3，距離130光年にある。ラテン名では，コル･ヒュドラエ(水蛇の心臓)とも呼ばれている。
