Japanese: アキグミ - あきぐみ

A deciduous shrub of the Elaeaceae family (APG classification: Elaeaceae). It branches well. The twigs are yellowish reddish brown. The leaves vary in size from round to elongated. The undersides of the leaves are densely covered with silvery scales. Flowers bloom in clusters in the leaf axils in April and May. The outer surface of the calyx is thickly covered with silvery scales, the inner surface is yellowish brown, and the tube has four elongated lobes that are lanceolate and well pointed. There are no petals, and four stamens. The fruits are small, globular or elliptical, ripen red in September and October, and are edible. In Japan, it is distributed in southern Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, and the Amami Islands. It is also distributed from the Korean Peninsula to China and around India.

グミ科（APG分類：グミ科）の落葉低木。よく分枝する。小枝は黄赤褐色。葉は円いものから細長いものまで、広狭さまざまである。葉の裏面は銀色の鱗片(りんぺん)に密に覆われる。花は4～5月、葉腋(ようえき)に集まって開く。萼(がく)の外面は銀色の鱗片に厚く覆われ、内面は黄褐色を呈し、筒部は細長く裂片は4枚、披針(ひしん)形でよく尖(とが)る。花弁はなく、雄しべは4本。果実は球形ないし楕円(だえん)状球形で小さく、9～10月に赤く熟し、食べられる。日本では北海道南部、本州、四国、九州、奄美諸島に分布。朝鮮半島から中国、インド周辺にも分布する。
