Miharu horse

Japanese:
Miharu horse

This is a local toy (gangu) made in Takashiba, Nishida-cho, Koriyama City, Fukushima Prefecture (formerly the territory of the Miharu Domain). Its origins date back to the Heian period, when Sakanoue no Tamuramaro attacked the Ezo, and a legend of a herd of horses appeared as reinforcements. It is said that when a wooden horse was carved in the shape of this horse and given to children, all of them grew up healthy, so it came to be called the "child-rearing wooden horse" (kinma). This wooden horse has an excellent shape and is said to be one of the "Three Horses of Japan," along with the Yawatauma (Aomori Prefecture) and Kinoshita-koma (Miyagi Prefecture). It is still called the wooden horse (kinma) locally today. There are various sizes, and in 1954 (Showa 29), the year of the horse, it was used as a design for New Year's postage stamps.
