Limonene - Limonene (English spelling)

It is a monocyclic monoterpene hydrocarbon that has dextrorotatory (d-isomer) and levorotatory (l-isomer) optical isomers. The optically inactive racemic form (dl-isomer) is called dipentene. d-Limonene is found in lemon oil and orange oil, l-Limonene in peppermint oil and spearmint oil, and the racemic form in turpentine and camphor oil. d-Limonene is obtained by fractional distillation of essential oils such as orange and lemon. l-Limonene is obtained by fractional distillation of peppermint oil. Dipentene is obtained by fractional distillation of camphor white oil.

Limonene is used as a fragrance in combination with various citrus oils in soaps, detergents, cosmetics, air fresheners, etc. As a food flavoring, it is used in citrus and various fruit flavors. d-Limonene is an important raw material for the synthesis of l-carvone (spearmint).

単環式モノテルペン系炭化水素であり、右旋性（d-体）と左旋性（l-体）の光学異性体がある。光学的に不活性なラセミ体（dl-体）はジペンテンといわれる。d-リモネンはレモン油、オレンジ油などに、l-リモネンははっか油、スペアミント油などに、ラセミ体はテレビン油、樟脳(しょうのう)油などに存在する。d-リモネンはオレンジ、レモンなどの精油を分留して得ている。l-リモネンははっか油を分留して得ている。ジペンテンは樟脳白油を分留して得ている。

　リモネンは香粧品香料として各種柑橘(かんきつ)油と併用され、せっけん、洗剤、化粧品、芳香剤などに用いられる。食品香料としては柑橘系、各種フルーツ系のフレーバーに使用される。d-リモネンはl-カルボン（スペアミント）の合成原料として重要である。
