Kisarazu Jinku - Kisarazu Jinku

Japanese:
Kisarazu Jinku - Kisarazu Jinku

This folk song has been sung in the Kisarazu region of Chiba Prefecture. It originally started as a "Niagari Jinku" song popular in the entertainment district of Edo in the late Edo period, but it began to be sung by fishermen in the port town of Kisarazu, who also added the calls of beach seine fishing. Kisarazu-tei Ryusei, a storyteller born in Kisarazu, further refined it into its current form, and it was repeatedly sung at Edo comedy halls during the Ansei era (1854-1860). The song fell out of fashion for a time after Ryusei's death, but Tsuyuzaki Seki, the proprietress of Kisarazu's Matsukawaro restaurant, taught the Kisarazu Jinku to the geisha Wakafuku, who then went on to perform it in the entertainment district of Karasumori, Shinbashi, Tokyo. It is a song that blends together the sophistication of Edo with the good spirit of the port town of Kisarazu.
