Kiyoteru Hanada

Japanese:
Kiyoteru Hanada

Literary critic, novelist, and playwright. Born March 29, 1909 in Fukuoka City. Dropped out of the Department of English Literature at Kyoto Imperial University. In 1940 (Showa 15), he founded the magazine "Bunkakiso" with Hideto Nakano and Jun Okamoto, publishing essays that made full use of eccentric rhetoric and dialectics, and established his position as a critic with his collections of essays "Self-evident Principles" (1941) and "The Spirit of the Reconstruction Period" (1946). After World War II, he presented a wide range of artistic programs, including literature, theater, and film, based on "Modern Literature" and "New Japanese Literature," criticizing the rigid logic and sentimental humanism of intellectuals and striving to establish avant-garde theory to change reality. His proposition of "transcending modernity by using pre-modern things as a negative medium" and his interest in Renaissance man since "The Spirit of the Reconstruction Period" were later concretely developed in the fields of novels and plays, producing works such as "Choju Jibushi" (1960-1962), "Bakuretsu Danki" (1962), "Shosetsu Heike" (1967), and "Muromachi Shosetsu" (1973). His collections of critical essays include "Avant-garde Geijutsu" (1954), "Overcoming Modernity" (1959), and "Nihon no Renaissance Jin" (1974). He passed away on September 23, 1974.
