Giant armadillo

It is an animal of the Armadillidae family in the order Odonata in the class Mammalia. It can reach a body length of 75 to 100 cm, a tail length of 50 cm, and a weight of up to 60 kg. It has 11 to 13 movable girdle bands on its back and 3 to 4 movable foreheads on its neck. It has many teeth, as many as 100 small ones. The claws on the third toes of its front feet are large, measuring 23 cm, and are useful for catching animals in the soil to eat. It lives near water in South America, and is known to feed on ants, termites, insects, snakes, and sometimes animal carcasses. It is said to give birth to two babies per litter.

哺乳(ほにゅう)綱貧歯目アルマジロ科の動物。体長75~100センチメートル、尾長50センチメートル、体重は60キログラムにも達する。背の可動帯は11~13枚、頸(くび)には3~4枚の可動する前甲がある。歯は多く、小さなものが100枚もある。前足の第3指のつめは大きく23センチメートルもあり、土中の餌(えさ)となる動物をとらえるのに役だつ。南アメリカの水辺にすみ、アリ、シロアリ、昆虫などのほか、ヘビ、ときには動物の死体を食べることも知られる。1産2子とされる。
