Born: 1492 [Died] Jiajing 28 (1549).3. A Chinese Ming Dynasty politician from Changzhou (Wu County, Jiangsu Province). His courtesy name was Zichun. He was appointed as a Jinshi in 1521. He served as the prefect of Jingzhou and held various other government posts. In 1547, he was appointed governor of Zhejiang and played an active role in suppressing the Japanese pirates. He strengthened coastal defense facilities, increased surveillance of incoming and outgoing ships, and imposed stricter ban-jia laws on coastal residents, which contributed greatly to the eradication of the Japanese pirates. However, his measures were too strict, which caused the animosity of the local nobles and wealthy merchants who profited from smuggling, and he was impeached by their schemes. In anger, he took poison to death. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
