Kabuki actor. Stage name Yamatoya. Son of puppeteer Tatsumatsu Juzaburo. Disciple of Ichikawa Danjūrō ​​IV. Along with Segawa Kikunojō III, he was a leading female actor in the Edo theater world during the Kansei period. He had a round face and a charming personality, and his stage performances were brilliant, leading to the nickname Otafuku Hanshiro. In partnership with Matsumoto Koshiro IV, he pioneered a new style of realistic acting in live-action dramas. All three of the Ichikawa Danjūrō ​​IV and Iwaiza were leading actors who also served as the head of the Osaka Iwaiza.

歌舞伎俳優。屋号大和屋。人形遣い辰松重三郎の子。4世市川団十郎の門弟。3世瀬川菊之丞とともに寛政期の江戸劇壇を代表する女方。丸顔で愛嬌があり,舞台ははなやかでお多福半四郎と呼ばれた。4世松本幸四郎と提携して写実的演技の生世話物で新生面を開いた。なお,1世から3世までは大坂岩井座の座本を兼ねた立役。
