A biennial plant of the Asteraceae family. A naturalized plant native to South America. It grows on sunny plains, grasslands, and roadsides, and is gray-green in color. The stem is 60-150cm tall, covered with coarse or short hairs, and branches in large numbers in the upper half. The basal leaves overwinter in a rosette shape, and die when the plant flowers. The stem leaves are oblanceolate, 6-10cm long, and densely covered with short hairs. From August to October, it produces numerous cone-shaped flower heads, each about 5mm long. The involucre is hairy, the ray florets are dirty white and shorter than the tube, and the pappus is light brown. The achenes fall off and germinate and reproduce easily. It appears to have been introduced to Japan around 1920, and its numbers have increased especially since 1945.
