Protocols are the procedures and rules that computers follow when communicating with each other. They are like a language that computers use on a network, and communication cannot take place unless both use the same protocol that they can understand. For this reason, the technical specifications for many Internet protocols are published in the form of Request for Comments (RFC), which anyone can view. Each computer connects to the network and communicates with other computers by incorporating a program (protocol stack) that performs the processes defined by the protocol. For example, the TCP/IP protocol is used to connect to the Internet. Also, to view web pages, a protocol called HTTP is used for communication between web browsers and web servers.

コンピューター同士が通信をする際の手順や規約などの約束事。ネットワークでコンピューターが使う言語のようなもので、双方が理解できる同じプロトコルを使わないと通信は成立しない。そのため、インターネットのプロトコルの多くはRFC（Request for Comments）という形式で技術仕様が公開されており、誰でも閲覧できる。それぞれのコンピューターは、プロトコルで定められた処理をするプログラム（プロトコルスタック）をコンピューターに組み込むことによってネットワークに接続し、ほかのコンピューターと通信する。たとえば、インターネットへの接続にはTCP/IPプロトコルが用いられる。また、Webページを閲覧するためには、WebブラウザーとWebサーバーとがやり取りするためのHTTPというプロトコルが使われている。
