[Died] November 10, 2007. New York, New York. American novelist and journalist. He studied aeronautical engineering at Harvard University, graduating in 1943. He served in the Pacific War, and drew attention with The Naked and the Dead (1948), based on his experiences there. He then published Barbary Shore (1951), a political allegorical novel, The Deer Park (1955, dramatized and premiered in 1967), which depicts the inner workings of Hollywood, and The White Negro (1957), a full-length essay. In the 1960s, he became interested in racial issues and the Vietnam War, and published the novel Why Are We in Vietnam? (1967) and The Armies of the Night (1968, Pulitzer Prize, National Book Award), a record of his participation in the anti-war demonstrations in Washington. His other works include the novels An American Dream (1965), The Executioner's Song (1979, Pulitzer Prize), and The Gospel According to the son (1997), as well as the non-fiction book Why Are We at War? (2003).

Died April 12, 1838. Munich. German Roman Catholic theologian. Studied at the University of Tübingen, where he became a professor in 1828. Published "Symbolik" (1832), a defense of Roman Catholic doctrine against Protestant theology. Because this work caused controversy, he moved to the University of Munich in 1835.
