A large deciduous tree of the elm family common in coastal areas in warm regions (illustration). The bark of old trees peels off in scales. Its Chinese name is 'Kaiyabaju' (Japanese elm tree). It is also called 'Mukuenoki' (Mukuenoki). The trunk is straight, reaching a height of 30m and a diameter of 1.5m, and sometimes has a buttress-like base. The bark is gray-brown with mottling, and the young branches are rough. The leaves grow alternately in two rows, are egg-lanceolate, 4-10cm long, and have long, pointed tips. There are three midribs, and the lateral veins that emerge from the central midrib run straight into sharply serrated edges. The leaf surface is covered with short bristles and is very rough.
