Born June 29, 1941 in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago. Died November 15, 1998. Conakry, Guinea. American black liberation activist. Moved to New York in 1952. Enrolled at Howard University in 1960 and joined the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. Elected chairman of the committee in 1966 and advocated Black Power. In 1968, he became leader of the Black Panthers, which were engaged in a more radical liberation movement. The following year, he left the party and moved to Guinea, where he became devoted to Pan-Africanism. He later changed his name to Kwame Toure, after the politicians Nkrumah and Toure, who worked hard for the independence of Ghana and Guinea.
