A city in the eastern part of Iwate Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1937. It faces Kamaishi Bay on the Sanriku coast and developed into a town with the Kamaishi Line running through it. There is an iron deposit to the west of the city, and mining began in 1829. After the Meiji Restoration, the Meiji government took control of the mine and established a steelworks, and smelting began around 1887, which was the origin of the Kamaishi Steelworks. Since 1934, it has been managed by Nippon Steel Corporation, and since 1950, it has belonged to Fuji Steel Corporation, and since 1970, it has belonged to Nippon Steel Corporation. Since 1963, the population has decreased dramatically due to successive rationalizations of steelworks. In March 1993, mining at the Kamaishi Mine, Japan's only iron ore mine, was closed. Blessed with fishing grounds off the coast of Sanriku and a ria coast, it has become the central base of Sanriku coastal fishing, and ice and canning industries are also thriving. Sankan Island is located here, and the coast is part of the Sanriku Fukko National Park. The city is home to the Hashino Blast Furnace Ruins (historic site), the oldest western-style blast furnace still standing in Japan, the Iron History Museum, and the 1,351m-high Goyo Mountain (natural monument) in the southwest, where monkeys, deer, and serows live. The city suffered damage in the Great East Japan Earthquake. 440.34 km2 . 39,574 people (2010). →Related topics Corporate towns Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
