A monovalent atomic group. Many organic compounds that exhibit acidity have a -COOH group in their structure, which is called a carboxyl group. Substances that contain this are called carboxylic acids. This group is named by combining carbo and xyl because it contains a carbonyl group and a hydroxyl group.
