A machine tool that cuts grooves and processes flat surfaces using tools attached to a ram that moves back and forth along the guide surface on the top of the main frame. It is also called a shaper. The workpiece is fixed onto a table attached to a saddle that moves intermittently from side to side. The saddle is attached to a cross rail that can be adjusted up and down. Cutting is usually performed when the ram is extended. The ram moves slowly when cutting, but a quick return mechanism is built in to return it quickly when not cutting. With the advancement and development of milling machines capable of high-precision flat processing, the use of shaping machines is declining, but they are still in use because the tools and setup are simple and the cost is low.
