After the Southwestern warlords defeated Chen Jiangming, Sun Yat-sen entered Guangzhou for the third time and organized the Guangdong Marshal's Office (the third Cantonese government, March 1923 - June 1925), succeeding his previous position as marshal. At this time, the Zhili faction, which controlled the central government, restored the Constitution and the National Assembly, so Sun Yat-sen no longer advocated protection of the law or relied on the warlords, but instead aimed for a new revolution based on Kuomintang-Communist cooperation.
