The goddess of sacred water in ancient Persian mythology. Her full name is Aredvi Sūra Anāhitā. Aredvi means "moist," Sūrā means "strong," and Anāhitā means "pure." She is the great goddess who deified the river of the same name, and has many similarities with the Indian goddess Sarasvati. She lives among the stars, is courageous and noble, rides a four-horsed chariot, and defeats demons and tyrants. She also promises fertility for nature and living things, protects birds, animals, and pastures, and is the guardian of royal authority. She is said to be a slim virgin who wears a gold crown, earrings, and necklace decorated with stars, but it is not clear whether this is the original form of the goddess. In Asia Minor, she was worshiped in the form of the Greek Anaitis. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
