Norman-French

They quickly absorbed the French language and culture, but because their language was a Norman dialect, it was called Norman-French (abbreviated NF) and was distinguished from Central French (abbreviated CF), which was centered in Paris. After the Norman Conquest, most of the ruling class and high-ranking clergy in England were of Norman descent, and they continued to hold several territories in France, including Normandy, and there was continued traffic between England and France, so French was the everyday language of the ruling class, and was used as the official language, official documents, and literary language along with Latin. …
