A general term for tryptophan-derived pigment compounds, such as xanthommatine, an insect eye pigment produced from L-tryptophan via kynurenine and 3-hydroxykynurenine. The name is derived from the ommatidium, the individual eyelets found in arthropod compound eyes, where ommatidium is most prominent. Ommatidia are the individual small eyes found in arthropod compound eyes, and ommochromes are contained in the photoreceptor units located on the posterior surface of the cornea. Xanthommatine is a phenoxazone derivative, and other known compounds include ommatin D (xanthommatin sulfate) and rhodomatin. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
